Summary

As has been proposed, EC++ does not define a Parallel C++ language per se. Instead, it looks to define a standard structure and a standard functionality for Parallel C++ application developers.

It seeks to define a structure within which exist a number of components. By defining the relationship between these components it sets out to define an environment which the developer of an appication can expect to find on a parallel system and which an implememtor has to offer.

EC++ will define mimimal extensions to the language in order to allow parallelism, and will propose functionality of higher level language libraries in specific implementations. The interfaces between the different components of the proposed EC++ system will be defined, particularly at the communications level, such that these levels can be implemented in a variety of architecture specific ways transparent to the applications writer.

In this way it is hoped that EC++ will offer a standard portable, transparent development environment within which the development of parallel C++ and applications can be done.
